Salalah is the biggest city nearest to Thumrait. It's a port city on the southern coast of Oman. This is where the DynCorp employees go to get away from the desolation of Thumrait. In fact, so many people come down just to spend their one or two day weekend, that one of the local hotels actually has a "DynCorp" rate. During the month that I spent in Oman, I made two trips down with the guy who was sent to Thumrait with me. We didn't get to do much since we'd have to drive down directly after work and sign in to the hotel. We'd have the evening to relax and get dinner. The next day was spent wandering around town for a while before we had to start the trip back. The brochures claim the Queen of Sheeba had a palace outside of Salalah, but we never did find it.
The main road leading out of the hills and into town.
The Crowne Plaza Resort - the hotel with a discount.

The rear from the beach.
A shot down the beach from the hotel. The first real beach I'd been on in about 15 years.
A couple of the local denizens hanging out.
A coconut grove across from the hotel.
Two of the local products waiting to ripen.
In the town itself. Not exactly a bustling metropolis.
A local cemetary
This is typical of a muslim cemetary from what I've seen. They're not much to look at.
A clock tower on one of the roundabouts that you find around town. They tend to make the roundabouts fairly large and then construct an eye-catching landmark on it.
One of the many mosques around town.
This is the local government center with the regional governor's offices.
On the second trip, there was a storm out to sea.
Of course that didn't stop people from venturing out into the water.
